Dental Care Rooted in Historic Oberlin Village

The City of Raleigh calls Oberlin Village "the longest surviving and most intact Reconstruction-Era freedman's colony in Wake County and North Carolina." The county library system dates the community to the late 1860s, after the Civil War. Its story reaches back further still, to 1858, when Jesse Pettiford, a free Black farmer, bought 16 acres along the New Hillsborough Road.

The village took its name from Oberlin College in Ohio, the alma mater of James Harris, a school whose leaders were abolitionists. The road through the settlement was renamed from New Hillsboro Road in 1870 and paved after Raleigh annexed the area in 1922. Dr. James E. Shepard, who went on to found North Carolina Central University, was born here in 1875.

The buildings still tell that history. The most significant surviving houses date from about 1890 to 1911, and the Graves, Morgan and Turner houses stand out for being two stories tall. Brick mason Willis Graves built his Queen Anne home around 1890, and it has since been restored and moved to a new lot a short way up the road. Other Victorian houses were restored and moved to the road, Wade Ave and Clark Ave.

In 2018 the City created a historic overlay district for the village, with a period of significance of 1873 to 1970. It protects seven historic buildings, and the City's overlay district page explains how it works. The county also renamed its regional library at 1930 Clark Ave to honor the community.

Faith and learning anchored the village from the start. Wilson Temple's congregation organized in 1865, and its Gothic Revival brick church from 1910 replaced an 1873 frame chapel. The community's school began in 1869 in Wilson Chapel, and a brick eight-classroom school opened on the main road in 1916. Oberlin Cemetery, established in 1873, is cared for today by the Friends of Oberlin Village.

Today the village sits among Raleigh's close-in neighborhoods. The Village District shopping center lies just to the east and southeast, and Wade Avenue crosses the main road at an interchange about half a mile north of our office. The cemetery sits east of the road near that Wade Avenue crossing, a quiet reminder of how long families have lived here.

Smart Dental Choices for Oberlin Neighbors

A dental office a short walk or bus ride away removes one of the biggest reasons people put off care. GoRaleigh Route 16 carries the community's own name and stops at the Smallwood Dr corner, steps from our office. Riders can get off the bus and be checked in within a couple of minutes.

Our weekday schedule makes early visits simple. We open at 8 AM Monday through Friday and close at 4 PM Monday through Thursday, with Friday wrapping up at 2 PM. Weekends are closed, so most patients book a morning slot and still have the full afternoon free.

Prevention keeps most visits short and simple. A professional cleaning removes the hardened buildup that brushing leaves behind, and a regular exam spots small cavities while a basic filling can still fix them. Our low-radiation digital x-rays appear on screen within seconds, so you see exactly what we are describing.

Gum health deserves more attention than it usually gets. Bleeding when you brush, gums that look puffy or teeth that feel slightly loose can all point to periodontal disease. We measure the pockets around each tooth at every checkup, which lets us catch changes early and treat them conservatively.

When a tooth has been lost or is failing, replacing it protects the bite and the teeth around it. New patients can book a complimentary dental implant consultation to review their options without any cost for that first conversation. Our CBCT 3D imaging shows bone height and nerve position clearly, so planning starts with real measurements.

Older fillings and crowns wear out on their own schedule. We check each one during your exam and only suggest replacing the ones that are cracked, leaking or failing. When a tooth does need work, you hear the reasons in plain language and choose the pace that suits you.

Some patients also want to talk about older silver fillings or the materials used in their mouth. We offer the SMART amalgam removal procedure and biocompatibility testing as part of our whole-health services. Dr. Turner reviews your history first, and every decision about those options stays with you.
